Shakespeare famously wrote about fictional witches in Macbeth, but the witch hunts that took place across the world from the 15th to the 18th century involved some very real people. Persecuted for a number of reasons, from jealousy, to misunderstood mental illness, to just not quite fitting into society's standards, the names of these women (and a handful of men) have been preserved both in documents from the time and through local legends.
